Good to hear from you Juan.

Great infos you posted there in the ending of your post.

About the USB... none of my players has USB support so I didn't know if it was standard..... I got quite many players though but all are too old for usb.

About your discussion, the DVP5990 has a MT1389S (DXE? model S series), and the DVP3260 has a MT1389L (model DE serie L).

You can check out my FAQ for screenshots of both chips.

By the way, I also made a topic on how to identify a MT1389 chipset here. The post is in spanish but I think it will give you the idea.

I'm not sure I'm getting #4 and #5. They print on the chip whether it's free of lead or not?

Wow! Thanks, techflaws! Unfortunately I cannot see DVP5990 photos because I do not have an account at avsforum... Can you please send me a direct link to the photos, or re-upload them at ImageShack, please?

About how to identify the chipset: #4 identify if the chipset is lead free. If it ends with an 'L' it is lead free (I think all chipsets made after 2005 are lead free). As a funny note, the chipset in the picture I used to explain how to identify MT1389 chipsets wasn't lead free. I had to Photoshop it.

#5 it's just a lot number. Non relevant information.

In the case of your DVP3260 you have:

MT1389DE
0810 - LEAL
KL801736

Model: MT1389DE
Serie: L
Lead free product
Fabrication: 0810 (year/week) -> First days of march, 2008
Lot number: KL801736

Mmh, I'm wondering how vb6rocod did it then cause in one of the threads he said he does only own the 3260? Anyway, I hope some readers come over from the other forums and donate, I've compiled a little FAQ in the meantime.

First I have 5160, but because of USB (I watch 99% of movies from USB), I buy later a 3260 with USB 2.0.... Then I get (buy) a LCD TV and (of course) a new player 5990... I give my 5160 to my mother and 3260 to my sister..... Now I'm happy with what I have....

That's the story with my 3 players...

Of course, LCD TV and 5990 with HDMI makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

So, are you by any chance interested in implementing some of those features talked about in this thread?

Alright, but maybe some of Hej456's great guides on this forum, like the one about First to last and last to first filelist patch, would give you some pointers?

I've also just verified what someone posted to the comment section of my blog: neither original nor modded firmware support the german Umlaut 'ü' (small u with two dots above it). Haven't gotten any reply from him whether it's the same on the 5990 but it's definitely the case with the 3260. So I've run some tests on it with weird results:

Original firmware .51:

  • all 3 capital umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) are supported
  • filebrowser replaces all 3 small umlauts (ä, ö, ü) with underscore
  • filebrowser displays ä and ö from ID3 tag but instead of replacing it with underscore drops the ü char entirely OR drops ü and every following char

vb6rocod firmware:

  • all 3 capital umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) are supported
  • filebrowser displays all 2 small umlauts ä and ö but drops ü
  • filebrowser displays ä and ö from ID3 tag but drops ü OR replaces it with úú (might be due to messed up ID3 tag, but I could see no difference)
  • all chars are displayed from srt subs

ARE ABSOLUTE SURE THAT ORIGINAL (PHILIPS) DISPLAY all 3 capital umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) ???? If so, is a "miracle" from my point....
And about u (umlaut), that char is in range FA-FF, I move to 0-5 or 6-10, but for "unknown" reason don't work. I try like this, and with NOP on this (to see if FA-FF is displayed). This code is part of Vladimir Boroda patch.
Code:

ROM:0004F676 004 F9 28                                   CMP     R0, #0xF9

About the umlaut chars FA-FF you can try adapting the unicode2cp routine from my Sigmatek XM-400 mod. It has the whole range 1250-1258 selected by a shared mem value, and does the FA-FF to 00-05 conversion too.

Yes, but only from ID3 tag. I've however corrected my pasting mistake above, srt subs do NOT show umlauts in original firmware. I've attached some filebrowser screenshots displaying Umlauts, the quality isn't so good due to my ancient analogue TV card (also when it comes to selected songs ;) ) so please bear with me.

What's freaking me out are the weird úú chars I'm suddenly getting on the modded firmware which seems to be related to umlauts and ID3v2 tags. I've switched back to v1 and those ID tags look good in the filebrowser.

Hello,

I have DVP3980, which seems to be a non-USB version of the DVP5990.

I have found that how I burn the music files to a DVD disc changes the way the special characters are displayed. I have to use ISO9660 and not UDF.

As far as the ú appearing all over the place, burning in ISO mode seems to get rid of the problem. But as an extra solution I also created a font with the characters in the 250-255 range copied to 6-11 not 0-5, which seems to be the best combination on my player. This isn't really a problem as long as I remember to use ISO mode, but I sometimes forget and burn in UDF mode, so changing the font helps in this case.

Even with these changes, the special characters in the 250-255 range are not displayed in the ID3 tags, only the characters from 0-249.

I am using the RISC from the DVP5990 in my player because it includes WMV playback, which my player doesn't.

I am also using the full UnicodeToCP routine that vb6rocod posted in the DVP5100 forum.

I have attached my modified firmware if you want to take a look at it.

Mmh, maybe the experts here can help you out. I for one am surprised that this feature isn't default in the filebrowser as it is used in the setup menu and therefore apparently already in the code somewhere.

Thanks for taking the time but I'm sure that's not the case cause the test files I'm referring to in this thread were all written to ISO/Joliet CD-RW. As I've verified again, these ú chars only show up in ID3v2 tags though they seem to be properly coded, at least I can't find any difference to those tags that display correctly when I check them in Winamp or MP3tag.

Since I do name my files properly I do not necessarily need those tags but I would like to have my umlauts and I can't get why only one of them doesn't work. Of course I also don't get the technical necessity for the player to display different charlengths for disc vs USB...

I never check before how work UnicodToCP from CD/DVD because with my Nero I can't write to disk (I use locale set to Romanian). Yesterday I install ImgBurn and I make an Image (ISO+Joliet) and burn with nero. I make also a new patch for UnicodToCP for 1250 and 1252 based on doc "ExSport_CP125x". I make a new table (256 char) for this.
Well, all good... all char are displayed. Still I don't understand why char in range 0xFA-FF are not displayed from USB... (high byte is ignored from USB, a char like 0x0160 is treat as 0x0060, I get "strange" char in this case).
